The best advice I have is when they inevitably lose you, whether in a store, a park, or the woods, tell them to stay put. I remember when we were in a theme park in Texas and my oldest took his eyes off us to look at something as we walked through the huge and crowded park. A minute or so later I noticed he wasn't with us. I ran back to find him nearly in tears as he realized we were gone. Thankfully he hadn't moved from where he lost sight of us. It's much easier to find lost children if they don't roam. We've always told ours to stay put, we'll be back.

we did this groovy jr ranger wilderness survival thing a couple of weeks after that happened, and it was great! i have now equipped each kid with a tiny hiking backpack with a whistle, light, poncho, and emergency blanket.
