The only reasons I mention the moolah thing are 1. I’m digging this swanky robe and cushy pillows that came with the room and 2. Somehow I still ended up paying ten bucks a day for internet access. Note to posh hotel proprietors: the Hardee’s in Boone has free wireless access. It might be time to step up your game a tad.
Yeah, so back to
The rest of the city is another story.
And it isn’t just the city, of course. We took a swamp tour
and learned about the devastation in the marshes and outlying areas.
On that
trip we ran into this big guy pictured here. He’s about nine feet, and came
right up to the little boat to snap up treats offered by our guide. Are the
treats yummy turtle eggs? Perhaps they’re hunks of raw meat? Nope, they’re
marshmallows. He was a big fan of the sugary confection; maybe we should have
brought him some beignets from the city.
I’ll write more about this soon- it’s late and I have
conference-a-rama starting in the morning. As far as reflecting on the trip, I
will say I’m glad we went. Our silly tourist dollars were much-needed in a city
whose will has been tried but not broken. It was important to see beyond the
media’s representation of this disaster. Nature doesn’t much care about race or
politics- Katrina destroyed lives indiscriminately. What I saw were snapshots
of a city trying to regain itself. I saw a very rich man patching his roof in
the Garden District and a poor woman pushing a cart on
