Urban Exploration is something that I love to do, but rarely get the chance. I've been jonesing to go into the abandoned Canon Memorial Hospital in Banner Elk for about 3 years, and I finally did yesterday. Check out the set of pictures here.

Wow! They are awesome. How long has this place been closed? Any idea? And why? Too small? To expensive to repair? (obviously when it closed it didn't look like it does now) It couldn't have been all that long ago, hence the Far Side cartoons and the cutesy wallpaper in the nursery. I'd love to know the history of this place. I can see people walking down those halls.

I have been a lurker for a long time. Just wanted to share this. This post reminds me of a talk given at this year's HOPE (Hackers On Planet Earth) Conference in New York. Visit:

and scroll down to Urban Exploring: Hacking the Physical World which is almost at the bottom.
Happy Listening!

Must be really spooky after dark! As a thumbnail, the bag it, tag it picture looks like a sci-fi wrapped-in-plastic body. And, squinting a little, the larger photo even has legs sticking out at one end... Neat photo perspectives!

Wow. They abandon hospitals? We are headed that way in two weeks, how hard is it to sneak in?
Surely all the college kids must haunt the place. I would have.
Those are awesome pictures!

Myself and a few of my friends JUST explored this hospital yesterday and today! We went at dusk, heard people in the woods, left! Went back at night, drove around the back, nothing or no one in sight..then when putting the car in reverse to circle again..car lights appeared behind us out of nowhere! THEN went back this morning..and myself and one friend actually entered the hospital and took pictures! Saw file cabinets full of files, old scrubs, brochures, Christmas decorations.....ALL kinds of creepy things!! Beware--this place is only for those who can truly handle it! But you get fair warning seeing as how there is spray painted "Keep Out" over EVERY part of the property! We even found a door that had "RUN" carved in it!!! It's quite an experience!
